The Wright brothers had lots of company at their Kitty Hawk camp in 1901. Seated left to right are Octave Chanute, Orville, and Edward C. Huffaker. Wilbur is standing on the right side inside the newly build shed.
The team of sweltering experimenters heaved the giant glider up the hill nine times on the first day before Wilbur had a decent glide. By scooting himself as far back as he could on the lower wing, Wilbur finally made a glide of 315 feet (96 m) that lasted 19 seconds. While the observers were impressed with the first day of gliding, Orville and Wilbur were not. âOur first experiments were rather disappointing,â Orville wrote home. âThe machine refused to act like our machine last year and at times seemed to be entirely beyond our control.â
